Interview anxiety is a universal challenge, but it doesn't affect all candidates equally. To understand how AI interview tools impact anxiety levels, we conducted a study with 200 job candidates over a three-month period. The results were striking.

Study Design

We recruited 200 participants who were actively interviewing for jobs. They were randomly assigned to two groups:

Both groups completed the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) before and after each interview. We also measured answer quality (scored by independent evaluators) and callback rates.

Key Findings

40%Anxiety Reduction
27%Better Answer Quality
35%Higher Callback Rate

Finding 1: Significant Anxiety Reduction

Participants using Voxclar reported a mean STAI score 40% lower than the control group. The effect was most pronounced among:

Finding 2: Improved Answer Quality

Independent evaluators scored answer quality on structure, specificity, and relevance. The Voxclar group scored 27% higher on average. The most significant improvement was in specificity — participants using Voxclar included 2.3x more quantitative details in their answers.

MetricControl GroupVoxclar GroupImprovement
Answer structure (STAR)6.2/107.8/10+26%
Quantitative details1.2 per answer2.8 per answer+133%
Relevance to question7.1/108.4/10+18%
Confidence rating5.8/107.9/10+36%

Finding 3: Higher Callback Rates

The Voxclar group received callbacks or next-round invitations 35% more often. This suggests that the combination of reduced anxiety and improved answer quality translates to better interview outcomes.

The Safety Net Effect

Perhaps the most interesting finding was what we call the "safety net effect." Many participants reported that they rarely needed to look at Voxclar's suggestions — but knowing they were available reduced their anxiety enough to perform better on their own.

The paradox: The most effective use of an AI interview assistant may be not using it. The mere knowledge that support is available if needed reduces anxiety sufficiently that candidates perform better without actively relying on it.

"I looked at the Voxclar suggestions maybe twice during my entire interview loop. But knowing they were there if I blanked out let me relax and be myself. That made all the difference." — Study participant, now employed at a Series B startup

This study has limitations we want to be transparent about:

Implications

These findings suggest that AI interview assistants serve a dual purpose: they provide practical support (answer suggestions, transcription) and psychological support (anxiety reduction through confidence). For organizations that use AI in their hiring process, acknowledging and accepting candidate-side AI use could lead to more authentic, less anxiety-driven interviews.
